Prime Minister Viktor Orbán had talks with President of the International Olympic Committee

The meeting was attended by President of the Hungarian Olympic Committee Zsolt Gyulay, former President of the Republic Pál Schmitt, State Secretary of the Prime Minister’s Office Balázs Fürjes and Director General of the International Olympic Committee Christophe De Kepper.

The sports executives spoke about the role of Budapest as an international sports capital, the important sports events held here, including the World Aquatics Championships currently under way, and the World Athletics Championships to be hosted by Budapest next year.

In the context of the war in Ukraine, Mr Orbán and Mr Bach highlighted the importance of restoring peace within the shortest possible time, underlining that the capacity of sport and the Olympic movement for creating peace should not be underestimated.

The parties also spoke about the fact that as a result of the joint efforts of the Hungarian Olympic Committee, sports associations, charitable organisations and the Hungarian government, at present almost 100 Ukrainian athletes have found shelter in Hungary, Mr Havasi reported.
