We don’t want the Hungarian people to be made to pay the price of the war

At these talks, too, Mr Orbán pointed out that Hungary has a vested interest in peace, in the war in Ukraine being brought to a swift conclusion through talks.

At the video conference, the parties highlighted that everyone in Europe, including in Hungary, already has first-hand experience of the impacts of the economic sanctions.

Similar to the leaders of several other European states, Mr Orbán, too, made it clear that the extension of the sanctions to the energy sector would impose a disproportionately large burden on people, families and businesses alike. The Hungarian government will not allow the Hungarian people to be made to pay the price of the war.

He added that we condemn Russia’s armed attack on Ukraine, and are providing all assistance for those fleeing the war. At the same time, the fact that most of the oil and gas come to Hungary from Russia and 90 per cent of families heat with gas cannot be ignored. Without gas and oil the Hungarian economy would stop, the Prime Minister underlined.
