As part of a working lunch, on Tuesday in the Carmelite Monastery, Prime Minister Viktor Orbán had talks with Senior Rabbi of New York City’s Park East Synagogue Arthur Schneier; they were joined at the meeting by President of the Republic Katalin Novák, Bertalan Havasi, the Deputy State Secretary heading the Press Office of the Prime Minister informed the Hungarian news agency MTI.

At the meeting, which was also attended by Balázs Orbán, the Prime Minister’s political director, the parties confirmed that Hungary was one of the safest European countries for members of the Jewish community. Members of the Hungarian Jewish community live in safety, are free to profess their identity and to exercise their religion in the three established Jewish churches.
In the context of the war in Ukraine, Hungary’s leaders and the senior rabbi agreed that we need a ceasefire and peace talks within the shortest possible time because the war has caused a grave economic crisis and a profound humanitarian disaster.
Mr Schneier spoke in words of praise about the fact that from the first day of the outbreak of the war between Russia and Ukraine, the Hungarian government, together with Jewish communities, non-governmental organisations and private individuals, has provided care in Hungary for Jewish refugees from Ukraine and has supported their travel on to Israel.
