Opening the parliamentary debate on the Bill for a constitutional amendment which he had submitted, Prime Minister Viktor Orbán said that the quota referendum on 2 October established a new unity which transcends party political boundaries. This unity, he said, is so wide, diverse and strong because people can sense that Hungarian independence is once again in danger.

Head of the Prime Minister’s Press Office Bertalan Havasi told Hungarian news agency MTI on Wednesday that “In the interests of the successful amendment of the Fundamental Law, Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, the President of Fidesz, is ready to hold discussions with the presidents of all political parties that have parliamentary groups”.

A new unity has been established

At a press conference in the Parliament Building on Tuesday, Prime Minister Viktor Orbán said that “The fact that in the referendum on 2 October there was a 98 per cent majority voting ‘no’ to mandatory relocation means that a new unity has been established in Hungary: a unity beyond party politics, which regards protecting our sovereignty as a national issue”.

We have surpassed the result of the referendum on joining the EU

Prime Minister Viktor Orbán described the result of Sunday’s quota referendum as “excellent”, because “we have surpassed the result of the referendum on joining the EU”. In a speech at the Fidesz-KDNP referendum results reception in Budapest, the Prime Minister announced that following the referendum he will be submitting a proposal to Parliament on a constitutional amendment, because the will of the people must be set down in the Fundamental Law.

According to Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, the most important question in Sunday’s quota referendum is whether there will be more “No” votes than “Yes” votes. If this is the case – meaning “No” wins – there will be legal consequences, regardless of the turnout, Mr. Orbán stated.
