We stand with Poland; Brussels abuses its power and threatens Europe’s unity
09. 09. 2021.
In the context of the Brussels attack on Poland, Prime Minister Viktor Orbán reassured Polish head of state Andrzej Duda – when he received him in the Carmelite Monastery in Budapest on Thursday – of Hungary’s solidarity and full support, Bertalan Havasi, the Prime Minister’s press chief told the Hungarian news agency MTI.

In addition to topical issues of Hungarian-Polish relations, one of the main topics of the meeting was the attack launched by the European Commission against Poland. With its Tuesday decision, the Brussels body abused its power in a previously unprecedented manner: it attacked the constitutional system and identity of a sovereign Member State,  Poland.

They did so at a time when Poland – similar to Hungary – is defending the EU’s external borders against the intensifying wave of migration, the press chief said relating the proceedings of the meeting.

This procedure is shocking, it is completely unacceptable, and destroys the unity of the European Union, Mr Orbán pointed out, recalling that at its Wednesday meeting the Hungarian cabinet decided to stand up for Poland in a resolution. Hungary will look into the possibilities of acting on the side of Poland in European court proceedings, the Prime Minister added.

On Tuesday, the European Commission asked the European Court to impose a monetary fine on Poland as long as the Warsaw leadership fails to suspend the operation of the disciplinary chamber of the Supreme Court.
